Shemini Atzeret

שמיני עצרת

← Song Library

Shemini Atzeret, on the twenty-second of Tishrei (and the twenty-third outside the Land of Israel), is the eighth-day assembly that follows Sukkot. Among Maghrebi Jews it is known as the "second festival" (le'id a-tani): a festival in its own right, without the sukkah or the Four Species, and kept as a separate day from Simhat Torah in the Diaspora.

Before Musaf, Moroccan communities recite Tikkun HaGeshem, the prayer for rain that opens the rainy season, with pizmonim such as Shifat Revivim (attributed to Shelomo ibn Gabirol), Mechase Shamayim, Leshoni Bonanta, and El Chay Yiftah, while the congregation answers "Mashiv haruah umorid hageshem." North Moroccan Judeo-Spanish liturgy also preserves festival piyutim for the day, including Banay Shemauni by Rabbi Yaakov Abensur of Fez.
